Growing Grosse Lisse Tomatoes In Pots

Growing grosse lisse tomatoes in pots. Sow direct in warm conditions or raise in trays of Yates Seed Raising Mix. It is a thick skinned fleshy roma perfect in salads or cut in half long ways and fried up on. Compact varieties such as San Marzano and Mamas Delight are ideal for smaller pots and great for small areas.

If you dont have sufficient space in your garden to grow tomatoes use containers pots or hanging baskets and troughs instead. Nearly all tomatoes may be grown successfully in pots although the larger varieties need large deep tubs 50-60cm with good staking or support. Transplant when seedlings are easily handled 10-15cm.

Grosse Lisse tomatoes can grow well in a very large tub or pot that is at least 40 to 50cm deep but only one seedling should be put in each one. Sow seeds directly into their final position or into seedling trays. One traditional and easy way is with a single long untreated wood or metal stake that the plant can continue to be tied to as it grows taller.

Grosse Lisse plants produce a bumper yield of medium-large rounded tomatoes. Use a good quality nutrient rich potting mix. When growing larger varieties choose larger pots.

Spring-Summer and Winter in warmer areas. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants. They will send out supplementary feeder roots that will add to the amount of fruit produced.

The Tiny Tim variety is very compact and grows well in small containers or hanging baskets. Plant in an airy sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots. If you dont have the space for crop rotation tomatoes grow extremely well in pots.

There also needs to be a strong climbing frame built in or next to the tub for the vine to climb up. Early morning around the base of the plant is the most beneficial method. Requires a 15 to 18m stake.

Grosse Lisse is a popular heirloom tomato producing large smooth red fruits with excellent flavour. Push mulch up to the main trunk as plants grow. Because it is a bush type there is no need to stake it.

The first variety to go in is an old favourite of mine - Grosse Lisse Lycopersicon esculentumGrosse Lisse and I pretty much plant it every year. Its a great all-round tomato. San Marzano can be grown in a small pot minimum 25cm diameter.

Staking allows your plant to spread a little wider than trellising and this is a good method for most gardens as well as tomatoes grown in pots where more elaborate methods wont fit. It is very popular for the 1 or 2 person household and doesnt grow out of control. 13 to 16 weeks until harvest.

Long cropping indeterminate climbing varity. They will need regular liquid fertilising but the effort will be very rewarding.
